Setting objectives

Setting specific, manageable and achievable objectives supportsprofessional development in the induction period and throughout the teaching career. Objective setting must recognise that the needs of teachers change during the course of the induction period and that they benefit from regular review. At each review, consider short, medium and long term objectives. The headteacher or induction tutor and the NQT must work together to agree objectives.

Objectives should be based on individual needs, the specific teaching context and the priorities of the school. They should support the NQT's progress towards meeting the induction standards and be monitored and evaluated on a regular basis.

The CEDP and TDA support materials (specifically for NQTs) provide a basis for setting objectives and devising an action plan. The action plan should identify the steps needed to achieve the objectives and ensure support. It should indicate how and when progress will be monitored. The school needs to provide preparation and support for induction tutors who are inexperienced in setting professional objectives and in drawing up action plans.

A valuable guide to planning and assessing an NQT's first year - setting objectives and formulating action plans - is available on the useful documents for induction tutors page.
