Ethnic minority achievement grant (EMAG)

The ethnic minority achievement grant (EMAG) is intended to provide equal opportunity for all minority ethnic groups. In particular those that are at risk of underachieving and pupils for whom English is an additional language.

EMAG is administered by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) within the Standards Fund. From 2006-07, EMAG became a fully funded grant from the DCSF. EMAG allocation is based on the numbers of pupils with English as an additional language and numbers of pupils from underachieving minority groups. These numbers are then multiplied by the proportion of all pupils receiving free school meals in the authority. Every LA receives a minimum allocation of £35,000.

LAs and schools should channel the spending of this grant towards the provision of additional support required to meet specific needs of bilingual learners and under-achieveing pupils, with the aim to narrow achievement gaps and increase equality.
