If you wish to become a community governor please contact the School Governance Unit (tel. 020 8825 5444) to find out where there are community governor vacancies so that you can then contact a school directly to express your interest in serving on the governing body.
The school will require you to provide some written information on your reasons for wishing to become a school governor and may provide an application form. It would be helpful to them if you can add whether you have any particular skills and / or knowledge which you could bring to a governing body, ie financial / building works / health and safety / management / legal / human resources, as well as a willingness to get fully involved in the life and work of the school and the governing body.
The current governing body is likely to want to know if you are a local resident or have any involvement in the community served by the school. If not, it is always helpful to explain your interest in that particular part of the borough.
If the chair of governors and headteacher wish to progress your
application they will arrange to meet with you at the school, so
that they can submit your name and information about you to the
governing body for election as a community governor. This is
a two – way process as you also need to visit the school to confirm
that you would like to serve as a community governor.
