Extended schools
The extended school initiative is a key way of delivering Every Child Matters, the national Change for Children programme of system-wide reform designed to ensure children's services work better together.
All schools are encouraged to become extended by 2010 by working with local providers, agencies and partner schools to provide access to the core offer of extended services for children, young people and families.
An extended school provides a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of the community in and around the school. Extended services can include adult education, community-based health and social care services, multi-agency behaviour teams and after school activities. Schools will consult with parents and involve them in the planning of services to develop a package that best meets their needs.
