Conference to celebrate action research June 2011
On Thursday 23 June in Ealing Town Hall, Ealing held a conference to celebrate Action Research in Ealing schools. Ealing Lead Research Practitioners showcased their research in two market place sessions. Delegates had the opportunity to find out about how classroom research has been developed and the impact it has had on pupil outcomes.
The plethora of learning inquiries across primary and secondary schools in Ealing had one important thing in common: a spirit of innovation and a desire to improve children’s learning. As Julie Lewis, Assistant Director of Ealing’s School Improvement team said, 'Innovation is the very last thing that should go during difficult financial times.'
Dr Chris Watkins from the Institute of Education, the keynote speaker, suggested that children are more likely to learn in the classroom when the following elements are present: active learning, collaborative activities and a learner driven environment. He stressed the importance of the relationship between classroom research and learning.
Clare Rees, the LA adviser who organised the event and played a key role in bringing this research programme together commented, 'the publication that was launched at this event not only includes write-ups of all the research, but it offers schools not involved a framework so that they can also carry out action research.'
