Progress on draft assessment grid

Phase 2 of the draft assessment grid is well underway and the sentence level part of the support document should be available to download by Christmas.

The grid has been put into use in several primary schools and feedback has been useful, especially the eagle-eyed teachers at one primary who spotted that three of the assessment criteria were in the wrong order! The mistake has been rectified and the updated version of the grid is now available on this site.

Read the Rose Report

Co-ordinators are urged to read the summary of the Rose Report on the Standards website rather than to rely on media reports.

While the media reports are excellent resources for KS2 teachers helping children distinguish between fact and opinion, they are largely useless for teachers wanting to understand Jim Rose's report.

You can read the key points from the summary here.

Reading School Library Service supporting Ealing

Over twenty schools have signed up to the Reading School Library Service since the closure of Ealing's school library service and Jeremy Saunders from Reading has given talks to heads, deputies and literacy co-ordinators.

Reading has also released a school libraries checklist to support you in developing your school library. Based on the DfES libraries materials (pdf), this checklist, which is aimed at the library manager of the school, should be used to action plan improvements to the library. Contact Reading School Library Service on 01256 811089.

School libraries have a vital role to play in all aspects of learning. A well resourced library can support all aspects of the primary curriculum as well as promoting and developing life long learning skills such as independent study and research.
