Volunteer Reading Help (VRH)

Raising standards together through personalised learning.

VRH is a national charity that provides primary schools with trained and supported volunteers who help children to read. The Ealing Branch was established in 1998.

How VRH can help your school

Reading helpers provide one-to-one support and mentoring to children who may be struggling with their reading, who lack confidence, language skills or parental involvement and support. Over time, the children learn to love reading and their communication skills improve. VRH helps children to develop a love of books and an opportunity to discover and explore a new world of reading materials.

Schools identify the children they believe would benefit from one-to-one support. VRH recruits, trains, CRB checks and places the volunteer in the school.  They provide the volunteers with a box of books and games.  Resources are carefully chosen to suit the children, and volunteers can change books and games each term to keep children interested.

Once the volunteer is settled, VRH then provide regular observation visits to ensure that all is going well and organise refresher and recall training.

VRH can also provide parent training and extended schools services.
