The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places particular duties upon public bodies, including schools, to eliminate unlawful discrimination, promote equality and good relations between different racial groups.
The new legal requirements of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act are set out in documents issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commissions Commission for Racial Equality (CRE). In December 2001 the CRE issued codes of practice on the race equality duty and in March 2002 the CRE issued more detailed guidance to schools on creating race equality policies.
