Educational psychologists
The service applies psychological principles to the process of teaching, learning and behaviour and works closely with parents, teachers, school special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs) and other professionals involved with children and young persons.
The majority of requests for involvement come from the schools and each psychologist is allocated responsibility for a group of schools which they visit regularly. They often act as consultants to parents and staff within the school, advising them on the problems which have been identified. The psychologists also work on a one-to-one basis with pupils, assessing their difficulties and advising on strategies for helping them. Training other professionals and parents is also an important part of the role.
The service also receives referrals from health service professionals - the majority of these children are pre-school. The education psychology service has an important statutory role in the assessment of pupils with special educational needs under the 1996 Education Act.
