Transition units in Maths and English

Four LAs – Hammersmith and Fulham, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Ealing - collaborated to produce a revision of the transition units for 2008. These are used by primary and secondary schools to support transition. Primary schools are urged to check with their main secondary school partners about whether they are using them, so that transition activities can be effectively linked across the two phases.

In these revised units, the team of teachers and consultants aimed to:

develop activities in line with the revised primary framework and the new secondary KS3 framework
focus on strengthening our Y6 students' confidence in their own learning and their ability to share this with their new secondary school teachers
enable secondary schools to have a useful starting point which will build directly on their students' Y6 learning
take account of the fact that secondary schools have many feeder schools, and not all students will have done these transition units
simplify the process of transferring evidence of learning through the transition units between primary and secondary schools

Because there has been no time to trial the units, we will be asking a sample of schools for an evaluation.
