Nationally, leading teachers are key players in implementing National Strategy initiatives. Under Ofsted criteria, they are identified as 'very good' to 'excellent' teachers by their heads, consultants and/or attached advisors.
A teacher aspiring to join the leading teacher group responds to one of the invitations made at intervals by strategy managers. This often happens through the strategies' consultants. They agree to be observed by other teachers and to contribute to CPD (central or school based) in their specialist area. In return, they access tailored training in their subject/area and other development.
In Ealing, they also receive an honorarium. Ealing is currently extending the leading teacher initiative to cover subjects other than mathematics and literacy and developing leading teacher use in areas such as special educational needs.
A list of leading mathematics and literacy teachers in Ealing is available.
For further information on leading teachers please visit the Standards Site under each of the KS3 and Primary National Strategy areas.
