Information about the council is available on the Ealing Council website and includes information on committees; council constitution; councillors; facts and figures; scrutiny; and strategies and policies.
Ealing Council benefits from the rich diversity of its community. It is committed to the principles of promoting equality and social inclusion and valuing diversity and talent. All staff in Ealing are expected to adhere to these principles, which are enshrined in Ealing's equality and diversity policy and race equality scheme.
Ealing is also committed to taking forward the recommendations arising from the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, and has signed up to meeting the equality standard for local authorities. This standard includes race, gender and disability.
Schools in the borough have multi-ethnic, multilingual communities. According to a recent survey, approximately 65 per cent of the pupils in Ealing schools are from black or minority ethnic backgrounds, and over 110 first languages are spoken. Our largest communities are from South Asian backgrounds, and there are also very significant communities of African, Caribbean, East Asian, Middle Eastern and Traveller backgrounds. Many pupils are refugees or asylum-seekers from all over the world.
Ealing’s schools service is working to ensure equality of outcome and access to education for all pupils.
Schools are expected to monitor achievement by ethnicity, to use this information in school self-evaluation and to take action to eliminate any differentials in attainment which the monitoring reveals.
Information to support schools and teachers in promoting
equality is given in the handbook 'preventing and addressing racism
in schools'.
