Headteacher report to governors

Following a number of requests to update the generic headteacher (HT) report to governors template, and following consultation with HTs and governors, we have revised the Ealing generic template for use with primary schools.
The template can be found on the EGfL governor toolkit page (EGfL log in required).
The main purpose of a HT report to governors is to enable governors to evaluate the progress the school is making. It is for the governing board (GB) to determine the format of the report:
“The board, not executive leaders, should determine the scope and format of reports they receive from executive leaders” However, “boards should be mindful of their additional requests for data and the workload impact on staff in producing additional reports.” (Governance Handbook 2019)
About the HT report template
Please be aware this template is only an exemplar and we recognise that we have put in more than you may need. If used, it should always be personalised according to your school and GB requirements.
As a guide, more detailed information should be shared at the start of the academic year, with a summary of what has changed/progress in subsequent reports. This reduces workload and also enables the GB to clearly see progress/change. See the report for more detailed principles and guidance.
