About the educational psychology service

Ealing’s Educational Psychology Service comprises a team of Educational Psychologists (EPs), Assistant Educational Psychologists (AsEPs) and Trainee Educational Psychologists (TEPs) who all have a range of training and expertise in child development and how children learn.

We assess children’s special educational needs and work with teachers, parents/carers, young people and other professionals in Ealing in order to support a child or young person to achieve good outcomes. Read more about the educational psychology service.

Working in schools and settings

We gather information about individual children and young people in order to understand their special educational needs. We are also interested in how the school and setting supports the child or young person and the impact of environment on learning and development.

The information is gathered by:

• Observations
• Discussions with parents and the school staff who know the child or young person best
• Individual assessments
• Discussion with other involved professionals Assessment is used to inform intervention and actions, which are jointly agreed by the school, parents and educational psychologist.

Children are never seen without parents' permission.

Whole school approach to educational psychology

Whole school approach to educational psychology We offer training to school staff, as well as individual and group consultation. We train in research methodology and can facilitate effective evaluation of programmes or approaches within a school. We can deliver programmes and interventions for an individual child or groups of children, including:

• Social skills programmes
• Mindfulness programmes
• Support for children with autism
• Support for children with a range of other special educational needs
• Group work
• Cognitive behavioural therapy
• Solution focused brief therapy.

Every maintained school in the borough has a named educational psychologist (EP). The core service is partly funded by an Annual Financial Contribution (AFC – previously known as the Levy. The AFC is paid by all schools according to size and level of need and partly funded by us here at the council.

This time is for statutory and non-statutory work.

Schools can purchase additional days on a pay as you go basis. These additional days will be provided if/when there is capacity within the Service. Schools can sign up to a two year commitment where competitive rates are available.

EPs and schools agree a work programme, usually for each school term. An EP will provide psychological advice as part of all special educational needs statutory assessments.
