School Governance (Roles, Procedures and Allowances) (England) Regulations 2013

The School Governance (Roles, Procedures and Allowances) (England) Regulations 2013 were laid before parliament on Monday 8 July 2013 and will came into force in September 2013.

The new regulations replace three sets of existing regulations:

  • The Procedures Regulations
  • The Terms of Reference Regulations
  • The Allowances Regulations.

The Regulations refer to the three core functions of the governing board, as set out in the governor’s handbook.

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

The National Governors Association (NGA) have also produced a useful question and answer sheet (pdf).
