Supporting Transition for children with additional needs

Moving from primary to secondary school is an important milestone for children. Many children will be anxious about this next step. They will be in a bigger building, needing to move from place to place, be more independent and make new relationships with children and staff.

Some secondary schools have shared that for children with additional needs an extra day of transition develops an early bond with the child and the school, where the child and staff get to know each other better.

We encourage every secondary school to consider their transition arrangements for children with additional needs so they can be best supported to have a happy and smooth start to new school life. The Year 6 to year 7 transition guide has practical ideas on how you can work with the primary school, the child and their family.

Occupational therapy (OT) service

ELP are working hard to improve our relationship between the OT service and schools. I met with the team last week and they are keen to hear your views about the service and help them to develop the clinical pathway, which ensures that schools more involved in the process and children receive the support they need.

If you would like to attend this meeting on Wednesday 4 May, 10-11am please email me Bhachum@ealing.gov.uk or your lead SENCo know and I will send you an invite.

The team are exploring training for schools and will be producing short training videos for you to use with your staff.

If you feel a child has been discharged too early or you have concerns about the advice provided please do contact the named therapist or send your concern to ealingcommunity.referrals@nhs.net

  • The importance of WELCOME
  • Inclusion is about Adults’ learning
  • Taking the Long View
  • Giftedness as a new paradigm for understanding disability and difference
