Primary schools

Childhood flu vaccination

This autumn 2022 all primary school aged children will be offered the flu vaccination (nasal spray) in school.

Thank you to schools for hosting these sessions and for their ongoing support.

Flu can be a very unpleasant illness in children, with serious complications including pneumonia and bronchitis. This year, it is especially important to protect children and the wider community from flu during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The programme is designed to not only provide individual protection to children, but also to prevent the spread of flu throughout the community. Your school has been contacted by the immunisation team to arrange a suitable date for vaccination.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination

In 2020/21 girls and boys in year 8 will be offered the HPV vaccination to help to protect against HPV related cancer. Cervical cancer in women is the second most common cancer in the world with around 3,200 cases diagnosed in the UK each year, a third of those cases end in death.

Teenage booster vaccinations (Td/IPV), Men ACWY and MMR

In 2020/21 young people in year 9 will be offered Booster vaccinations of Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio (Td/IPV) and Meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) and Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) as a catch up for those who are not fully vaccinated.

Young people will usually have already had four Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio immunisations and this booster is needed to complete the course and to ensure immunity continues into adult life. The Men ACWY vaccination helps to protect young people at this age, who are particularly at risk, against a bacterial form of meningitis which is very serious and sometimes fatal.
