Risk protection arrangements scheme advice for school management teams

Schools will be aware that the government has recently announced that they may join the risk protection arrangements (RPA) scheme. This has been announced at very short notice with the potential for implementation as early as 1 April 2020.
The insurance team are currently looking into the implications of RPA that will be offered to local authority maintained schools from 1 April 2020 and how this may affect the current insurance arrangements schools have in place with the council.
We are working with our insurance broker and providers to confirm what contractual obligations are in place in respect to school insurance and once we understand our position, we will notify schools of the date they will be able to leave the scheme, should they choose to do.
The insurance team have recently concluded an insurance tender (for the council and maintained schools) and are currently reviewing the school recharges. It is proposed the recharge method will change to a per pupil rate for schools for the financial year 2020/21 to enable a more direct comparison.
It is important to note that the current arrangements and those offered by RPA are different. We are also developing an insurance comparison table, which will compare the RPA to the council's insurance provision.
