New version of keeping children safe in education - September 2020

The Department for Education (DfE) have issued an updated version of KCSIE that will come into force from 1 September 2020. Until then, the 2019 version should continue to be used. Both versions are available on GOV.UK:

Annex H lists the changes. Those of note include:

  1. The definition of safeguarding has been expanded to make it clear that both mental and physical health are relevent
  2. Where a child needs a social worker the school should use this to inform decisions about safeguarding
  3. Wording has been changed to make it clear that procedures for managing allegations against teachers and other staff also apply to supply staff and volunteers
  4. The definition of situations when procedures for managing allegations should be used has been expanded to include "behaved or may have behaved in a way that indicates they may not be suitable to work with children" that is actions that may make someone unsuitable to work with children even if they don’t necessary involve children
  5. There are no changes to the safer recruitment guidance.
