The Department for Education (DfE) and Standard Testing Agency (STA) have announced that in the 2020 to 2021 academic year only, schools must administer a past version of the check to year 2 pupils during the second half of the 2020 autumn term. This is due to the cancellation of the phonics screening check in June 2020. Schools should return results to DfE through their local authority.

Schools must submit phonics results for their year 2 pupils to the LA by the end of the autumn term. The collection opens on COLLECT (accessed via DfE Sign-in) on Monday 7 December. The Local Authority ask that you submit your data on COLLECT by Thursday 10 December, in order to give us enough time to check errors and queries with you before the end of the Autumn term.

Important dates

  • Friday 23 October - Schools should order braille versions of the 2017, 2018 or 2019 phonics screening check, if required
  • Second half of the 2020 autumn term (Monday 2nd November onward) - Schools must administer a past version of the phonics screening check to year 2 pupils
  • Monday 7 December - Phonics autumn 2020 COLLECT blade becomes available for schools to submit their data
  • Thursday 10 December - LA requests schools submit their data via COLLECT by this date in order to give us enough time to resolve any errors and queries before the end of term.
