A new version of Statutory guidance: Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE) is now available and will come into force from 1 September 2021. Until then schools should continue to use the 2020 version.

Changes for schools to note

There are a large amount of substantive changes compared to previous years of which schools will need to be aware. These are listed in Annex G of the new guidance.

Part five: Child on child sexual violence and sexual harassment must be read alongside the new version of the Education Department's advice: Sexual violence and sexual harassment between children in schools and colleges September 2021

Annex A is a condensed version of Part one of KCSIE that can be provided instead of Part one to new staff who do not directly work with children.

Staff induction

As part of their induction, new staff must be provided with:

  • Part One of KCSIE (or Annex A)
  • The school's child protection policy
  • The school's behaviour policy and
  • The staff behaviour policy or code of conduct, along with an explanation of who is/are the designated safeguarding leads and what is their role.

Schools HR will be updating the staff Code of Conduct and the model procedure for schools responding to allegations of abuse made against teachers and other school staff and volunteers to reflect the new changes.
