Autumn 2021, year 2 phonics check – guidance and submission dates

25 Oct 2021

The Department for Education (DfE) and Standard Testing Agency (STA) have announced that in the 2021 to 2022 academic year schools must administer a past version of the check to year 2 pupils, this is due to the cancellation of the year 1 phonics screening check in June 2021.

Schools are encouraged to administer the check at the beginning of the second half of the autumn term. Schools should return results to DfE through their local authority by Thursday 9 December 2021.

The Local Authority ask that schools upload their Phonics CTF to S2S (accessed via DfE Sign-in) by Thursday 9 December, in order to give us enough time to check errors and queries with you before the end of the autumn term. You can submit your return to us as early as you like once you have completed the check.

In 2020, some schools left administering the check until the end of term, and then when children had to isolate were unable to meet the deadline – the LA then had to negotiate extensions with the STA and DfE on schools’ behalf, they are unlikely to make similar concessions this year as schools have had several months extra notice. Please make sure you administer your check in plenty of time ahead of 9 December – you have the whole of the second half of the autumn term (Monday 1 November onward) to do so.

Important dates

  • Friday 22 October - Schools should order braille versions of the 2017, 2018 or 2019 phonics screening check, if required.
  • Second half of the 2021 autumn term (Monday 1 November onward) - Schools must administer a past version of the phonics screening check to year 2 pupils.
  • Thursday 9 December - LA deadline for schools to submit CTF of their Phonics data via S2S (in order to give the LA enough time to resolve any errors and queries before the end of term).
