Description:

Health and safety management audit for schools where the local authority is the employer.

Includes annual people-based health and safety management audit (limited to the school only and not any associated sports centres, caretaker homes, etc) which will include:

  • accident reporting
  • educational visits
  • infection control
  • governors health and safety
  • medical conditions
  • playground equipment
  • policies
  • risk assessments
  • staff training
  • workplace inspections

Items covered in the local authority’s annual audit assistance survey (such as fire, legionella, asbestos, gas, electricity, and lifts) are not included in this audit to avoid duplication.

For other schools where the local authority is not the employer-

  • An annual people-based health and safety management audit (limited to the school only and not any associated sports centres, caretaker homes, etc) as that provided for local authority schools (see above), but also covering:
    • Fire
    • Legionella
    • Asbestos
    • Gas
    • Electricity
    • Lifts

Any health and safety management audits carried out by the local authority are a point in time review based on evidence seen and staff spoken to. The audits do not include a technical/quality check of documentation seen or if actions given in specialist reports/documentation (such as legionella risk assessments for example) have been adequately or suitably completed/progressed by the school.

Schools are responsible and accountable when it comes to meeting health and safety legislation. Having a health and safety management audit carried out by the local authority does not automatically mean that the school is fully compliant with all health and safety legislation. As such, the local authority cannot accept any form of liability as a result of this service.
